Dollar Firms Toward 102 as Yields Climb Ahead of Fed Minutes
The DXY added 0.44% to 102.05 as Treasury yields rose and sterling, the euro and gold all fell ahead of today's Fed minutes and BoE's Bailey.
The DXY read
The US Dollar Index is trading at 102.05, up 0.44%. The move comes with a broad dollar bid: the euro, sterling, the Australian and New Zealand dollars all lost ground against it, and so did the Canadian dollar and Swiss franc (USD/CAD +0.34%, USD/CHF +0.23%). Treasury yields rose across most of the curve (10-year +5.1bp, 30-year +5.3bp), a backdrop that typically supports the dollar. Equities softened — the S&P 500 fell 0.45%, the Dow 0.79%, the Nasdaq 0.50% — and the VIX rose 2.33% to 15.36. Gold fell 1.30% and silver 2.47%, consistent with dollar strength. Reuters and Yahoo Finance Australia both flagged market caution ahead of the Fed's September meeting minutes.
Rates & the Fed
US Treasury yields rose today: the 10-year added 5.1bp to 5.320%, the 30-year 5.3bp to 5.694%, the 5-year 2.6bp to 5.054%, and the 3-month 0.8bp to 4.045% (Yahoo reference data). The front and long end moving together is consistent with the dollar's gain on the session. The Fed funds target sits at 3.75-4.00% after a 25bp hike on September 16, 2026 — the first hike since 2023, decided 12-0 — and most officials have projected at least one more hike this year; the live question remains further hikes, not cuts. FOMC Member Waller is due to speak today, and Unemployment Claims print tonight (forecast 200K vs. a previous 197K), with Reuters and Yahoo Finance Australia both noting caution ahead of the September FOMC minutes.
The majors
EUR/USD fell 0.60% to 1.1193, part of a slide that eurozone commentary has tied to a September inflation flash of 3.8% and ongoing French budget strain. GBP/USD slipped 0.47% to 1.3212 (more below). USD/JPY was little changed, down 0.04% to 158.03, with the wide US-Japan short-rate differential — roughly 250-275bp — still the backdrop even as Japan's policy rate sits at 1.25% after its own September hike. USD/CAD rose 0.34% to 1.4256, with the Canadian dollar trading against a wider-than-expected August trade surplus but softer crude prices (WTI −1.25%).
Pair in focus: GBP/USD
GBP/USD is down 0.47% to 1.3212, moving in step with broad dollar strength rather than any standalone sterling news in today's data. The desk's background points to UK fiscal anxiety as the slower-burn driver: 30-year gilt yields have been pushing to multi-decade highs ahead of the October 28 Budget, and the BoE's Catherine Mann has said UK inflation above target "has become embedded" and risks further entrenchment in wage talks. Today's UK calendar is heavy with Bank of England voices: the Credit Conditions Survey, MPC members Greene and Pill speaking, and — the marquee event — Governor Bailey speaking at 23:15, flagged high impact. The ECB's account of its September meeting is also due today, a cross-currency risk event that could move both sides of the pair.
